On Tuesday 10th June Ruthin Town Council held its annual awards night for citizens of the town for 2024.

The awards were presented by the Mayor of 2024 – 2025, Councillor Jabez Redfern Oakes with the Master of Ceremonies being the current Mayor, Councillor Peter Daniels.

Three awards were presented.

Citizen of the Year was awarded to Bethan Hughes, for her contribution to cultural life in town.

Community Group of the Year was awarded to the Dementia Friendly Community Choir, led by their conductor Alys Winstanley, all the members of the choir have lived experience of dementia or caring. They perform regularly in events in and around Ruthin.

Young Person of the Year was awarded Ffion Jones, a Sergeant at the Ruthin Air Cadets who carries out a great deal of voluntary work as part of that role and wider within the community.

Following the awards attendees were treated to the choir singing in both Welsh and English, with a particularly moving version of Billy Joel’s Piano Man.

Councillor Redfern Oakes said “This year there was a particularly high number of nominations and the competition for all the categories was fierce. I was delighted to present these awards to the three very worthy winners”.

Each received a signed certificate and a donation to a charity or good cause of their choice for £100.  

A good night was had by all.
